not forgetting to remember is a site-specific series of three photographic images. The images were captured on the land of Stonehenge in the Tankwa Karoo, on a re-visit to where my decolonizing process started during my second participation of the Tankwa Artscape Residency (2018). During this 2018 residency, I created a site specific performance piece title please forgive me which explores my own white colonial ancestry within the context of Southern Africa. As a keen collaborator, I grapple with complicated content related to social healing often explored through the medium of performance. The experience of the 2018 residency
remains incredibly impactful, and has considerably altered not only my inherent thinking, but also my artmaking trajectory. I have been forever altered.
not forgetting to remember is a photographic triage continuing my internal conversation as I examine my own posiKonality as an arKst of colonial heritage. Through this body of work specifically created on this Land again, I remind myself how seNler colonialism remains present
and how the pracKces of decolonizaKon and anK-colonialism need to be constantly
foregrounded in my own thinking and pracKces. As I continue to seek ways to bridge cultural
fragmentation through empathy, I strive to continuously pracKce deep-listening while
remaining constantly vigilant to power relaKons from an anK-colonial perspecKve.
I fully acknowledge my position as a white artist from colonial-lineage living on First Nations
land in Southern Africa. Issues around land, memory of land and land dispossession remain
continuous to my art practice, whilst applying anti-colonial practices such as deep-listening and
humility in deepening my searches towards cultural interconnectedness and social healing. Itis through the concept of entanglement, explored through cultural divides, that I hope to
contribute towards a more unified society.
In this photographic work, the vulnerability of humility is portrayed both in the positioning of
the white body facing the soil and in the reveal of the upper skeletal body. The required self-
work of whiteness is messaged.
Ultimately, the work is a plea for forgiveness.
